As you all know, we did a project on finding moments where math was used in film not too far into the past. While elements of math can be found in certain scenes of movies, math is also used in the making of movies, as well as the making of the materials used to create these films. For instance, when the original Star Wars was being made in 1977, many of the technologies needed were not available. As a result, the staff of the movie crew made their own. One of these tools was called the “Dykstraflex”, which involved a crane that effortlessly moved the camera around. Mathematics were used to determine how long the shaft would be, as well as the maximum range of movement it would have. Math is also used in various other films to determine the sizes of sets and props that will be most convenient for the actors to interact with and use. So, a shorter time ago, in a galaxy not-so-far-away, math was and is still used in the making of film.

I remember when we wrote a paper on a certain movie that had math in it. I thought it was interesting that you thought of this. I would have never came to this conclusion because i never thought about this until now. I think it was a good idea you brought this up because there is a lot of math to do with the camera and filming. There is different type of camera holders that are made with different lengths. Good post.

I thought this post was super cool! Starwars has always been one of my favorite franchises and I have always wondered how special effects worked. I never knew that they had made an entire new tool with math to help create it. Great post!!

This is a great post. I never thought the people who made Star Wars had to improvise in production. Though considering the technological marvel it was at its time, thought is quite probable.

This is a great post! I knew that math was used in the creation of technology and most definitely the props in films, but this makes me think of claymation movies. It probably takes very precise measurements to create the right proportions for the figures in those movies, as well as the settings and props for those figures.

Before reading your post, I had never known that the necessary technology was not available during the creation of Star Wars. I find it interesting how people are capable of creating new technology using math. Good job!

Good job Joseph! I liked how you took something interesting, like Stars Wars, and used it as an example in your post.

I like the Star Wars movies but I never new all the technology that went into that making of the movies. I remember you taking about the Dykstraflex when you did that play for Pittard.

Math is in the movies, think about how it would look if we never used math over all ,math is the center to everything that we do and how you have pointed out math is a key to our entertainment and happiness because movies are that .

Very creative post Joe, I liked how you ended it! It was cool to see you not only say how math is used in almost all movies, but also giving an example from a very famous movie almost all people have seen! Great post!

Great post! I think it's great that you used a movie that you like and wrote about how math helped make it. You helped point out that although we may not like math all of the time, it helps create the things we love.

Great job Jose! Doing the math in movies project was really interesting in learning that math was even in movies, and you did a good job elaborating on it.

I always wondered how math would be used in movies especially in old movies. I have now learned a little bit on how it is used like the Dykstraflex. It was quite difficult in the past because of the lack of technology which made movie making a hard task and a very impressive job for having done all that.

Before I read your post, I didn't know how much math was involved in something as common and as popular as Star Wars. It makes me wonder how many other movies have had math involved behind the scenes. Good job!

How did I not call that you would incorporate Star Wars in your blog, lol. But great job!! I haven't noticed that math has such a large role in movies, not only with the sets and props, but as well as the actual movie itself.
