Application of mathematics is the key to understanding the world around us. We strive to open your eyes to the world as we see it through our mathematical lenses. As a class, we share our blog, our knowledge, and our growth and it is "Co-sined" by all of us.
Math applies to many things in real life, especially pertaining to probability and winning money. When playing the lottery, you can calculate your chance of winning by dividing the number of winning numbers by the total possible lottery numbers. Most lotteries allow participants to choose 6 out of 49 numbers, so the overall probability of winning the lottery would be 1 in 13, 983, 816. Compared to your chances of winning the lottery, your have a much better chance at winning with a slot machine. Most machines have three rows with one main jackpot image on each. The chance for one to land on the jackpot image is 1 in 64, and the chance for all three rows to land on the jackpot is 1 in 262, 144. These chances may vary, depending on the lottery or slot machine being played, but the math behind them remains the same. Did you know that some slot machines may be rigged? They are made you let you win or lose according to the number of spins and how much money you made.

While some of them may be rigged, this is just concerning the standard odds of winning. However, if a slot machine were to be rigged, it could skew the odds either in your favor or to make it more difficult to win.

This is an interesting topic to think about. I would think going to slot machines, you would have a better chance of winning and you showed that. You have a better chance of getting the jackpot image to show up in one out of 64 which would be a lot of money to spend on trying to win the jackpot.

One out of 64 isn't optimal odds because of the money you'd have to spend to guarantee that you'd hit the jackpot, but it would most likely be a better investment than playing the lottery.

Wow this was really interesting. I didn't realize how large the potential was to win at a slot machine. This is huge! I guess if you ever tried go to a slot machine, you could calculate your odds of winning and choose the one with the best chance. (Or at least that's what I would do!) Very interesting topic. Like the post!

The potential to win at a slot machine is pretty large, especially compared to the odds of winning the lottery. Calculating your chances at each machine would allow you to potentially make more money, so it would be worth it. Thanks!

Good point you make here. I didn't realize actually think about how math can be related to this. I wish I can win a lottery, but the chance for me to win one is kind of hard.

Thank you, and I wish I could win a lottery as well. If only the odds of winning a lottery were as good as the chances of hitting the jackpot at a slot machine!

I've never really thought about how people use probability with the lottery. I think it's a really interesting topic. I never really thought that people would calculate the probability of how likely they are to win, but I guess some people do it.

It isn't something people normally think about it, but I suppose some people calculate their odds of winning in order to determine which would be a better way to spend their money trying to win.

Wow this was really interesting. I've always wondered how they calculated your chances of winning in ads but this shows how. Very interesting and well done!

It is crazy to think about how small the chances are to win the lottery. I have seen statistics on things that are more likely to happen to you such as getting struck by lightning twice in the same day. That doesn't happen to many people.
